Elecy Safety Instructions
Your safety comes first. Please read these instructions fully before riding. By using any Elecy e-bike you confirm you understand and will follow UK law and safe-riding practice.
1) UK Legal Requirements (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles – “EAPC”)
In the UK, an e-bike is treated like a normal bicycle only if it meets EAPC rules:
- Pedals must be fitted and able to propel the bike.
- Motor continuous rated power must be 250W or less.
- Electric assistance must cut off at 15.5 mph (25 km/h).
- Motor should assist only while pedalling (except for approved low-speed “walk assist”).
- Rider must be 14 years or older to ride an EAPC on public roads.
If your e-bike does NOT meet EAPC rules (for example, higher power, higher assisted speed, or throttle-only riding above walk-assist), it is legally treated as a moped/motorcycle. That means you may need DVLA registration, vehicle tax, insurance, type approval, a valid driving licence, and an approved motorcycle helmet before using it on public roads.
2) Before Every Ride (Quick Safety Check)
- Brakes: Test front and rear brakes. Pads should bite firmly without excessive travel.
- Tyres: Check pressure, tread, and for damage. Under-inflation increases stopping distance.
- Wheels: Ensure axles/quick releases are tight and wheels spin true.
- Lights & reflectors: Required at night on UK roads; keep them clean and working.
- Chain & drivetrain: Clean, lubricated, and shifting smoothly.
- Battery: Locked in place, no rattling, no visible damage or swelling.
3) Safe Riding Essentials
- Helmet: Not legally required for EAPCs, but strongly recommended.
- Visibility: Wear bright/reflective clothing, especially at dawn/dusk/night.
- Speed control: Ride to conditions and your skill level. Slow down in crowds and on shared paths.
- Braking distance: E-bikes are heavier and faster than standard bikes—leave extra space.
- One rider unless stated: Do not carry passengers unless your model is designed and rated for it.
- No phone use: Do not use handheld phones while riding.
4) Where You Can Ride
- EAPC-compliant bikes: May be used on UK roads, cycle lanes, and anywhere bicycles are allowed.
- Non-EAPC / high-power modes: Not legal on public roads or cycle paths unless registered as a motor vehicle. Use only on private land with permission.
5) Battery Charging & Fire Safety
Batteries are high-energy devices. Follow these rules every time:
- Use only the supplied/approved charger.
- Charge indoors in a dry, ventilated area away from exits, flammable materials, and direct heat.
- Do not charge unattended or overnight.
- Never cover the charger or battery while charging.
- Stop using the battery immediately if it is hot to touch, leaking, smells unusual, or looks swollen/damaged.
- After riding: Let the battery cool for 30–60 minutes before charging.
- Storage: Store at room temperature, 30–70% charge for long periods, away from sunlight or freezing conditions.
6) Riding in Rain, Cold, or Rough Terrain
- Wet roads: Brake earlier and gently. Metal manhole covers and leaves are slippery.
- Standing water: Avoid deep puddles—water can damage electronics.
- Cold weather: Battery range reduces in low temperatures; recharge more often.
- Off-road use: Wear extra protection and reduce speed; check bolts afterwards.
7) Maintenance & Modifications
- Do not modify motor, controller, speed limiter, or throttle in ways that make the bike non-compliant for road use.
- Check bolts monthly (handlebars, stem, crank, wheel nuts).
- Service brakes and tyres regularly. Replace worn parts promptly.
- Only use compatible parts recommended for your model.
8) If You Have an Accident
- Move to safety if possible and check for injuries.
- Call emergency services if anyone is hurt.
- Do not ride a damaged e-bike. Disconnect the battery if safe to do so.
- Contact Elecy support before using the bike again.
These instructions are general guidance for safe use in the UK. Always follow local signage, the Highway Code, and the specific manual for your model.
